Is there any cautionary advice about investment clubs buying REITs?
Hi Jeanne,

Yes. There are several issues. You can find them described further here:

Hi Jeanne,  You need to confirm this but I believe that you can invest in an REIT index fund to avoid the tax problems.  One of the funds that I am invested in is REM and had no problems.

It wouldn't be a problem, but there would be extra work for your treasurer at tax time to correct the allocation of any distributions you received. As you can see here:

http://us.ishares.com/product_info/fund/distributions/REM.htm

Some of the REM distributions have had a portion reclassified as a Return of Capital over the years. This is probably something you wouldn't find out until after the end of the year. If it was figured out late, it might even precipitate an amended 1099 and late changes to your club taxes.

REIT's are more prone to this type of issue than stocks are. They just make your club accounting a bit more complicated. Many people don't want to understand and deal with the issues like this that come along with them. That's why we recommend you stay away from them to keep things simple.

If you think the amount of income you'll earn is worth the trouble and the potential for delay in filing your club taxes, go for it.
