Do It Yourselfers

I suspect there are many in this crowd who, like me, consider themselves do-it-yourselfers. After all, that's what bivio is. A program you can use for do-it-yourself investment club accounting and tax preparation.

Anybody have any thoughts on the Etsy IPO? Do you buy or sell on Etsy? How successful do you think they are as a business?

My husband shops Etsy for presents, especially earrings for my daughter and for me. He's a fan of the unique offerings at decent prices & convenience. I'm also a fan; there's some good art out there in Etsy-land & I'm wearing some at this moment.

As far as the IPO, I'm interested but want to dig into the financials & haven't made the time to do so yet.

As a platform for artists to sell their work, I think Etsy delivers.

I have no idea on their financial position but I have read articles that there are people who sell on Etsy who are not happy with the IPO. There are changes that are going to happen that the sellers are worried about. Sorry that I don't remember the details but you might be able to Google it. I believe one of the articles was in Bloomberg Business week.

Here is their most recently amended registration statement, which has a lot of very readable and understandable information in it:

Etsy Registration

This includes an interesting overview of their business mission and plans:

Prospectus Summary

And a discussion of the risk factors:

Risk Factors

There's also a summary of their financial results for the last 3 years:

Historical Financial Results

It doesn't look like they've been able to turn their good ideas into profits yet. It does looks like so far the market expects them to be able to do that since their price is already almost twice their IPO price.

Since social conscience is not always strictly in the best interest of investors, the owners of Etsy may find a new challenge in operating their business.  Depending on where you find yourself in that balancing act, you may not appreciate the changes they make to appease their new owners.
