What business Code did you use to register with New Jersey.

Russell,

You shouldn't use any business code because you shouldn't be filing a NJ-REG since you aren't a business.

I've been trying to get the NJ Division of Taxation and Department of Revenue to straighten out things that they have mucked up this year. Investment clubs are specifically NOT businesses according to the NJ Division of Taxation, but for some reason, the NJ Department of Treasury (which the Division of Taxation is part of) is insisting on an NJ-REG filing before allowing a partnership access to the electronic filing services necessary to file the NJ-1065 tax return. This is something apparently new this year as there has never been a problem in the past gaining access to the electronic filing system.

My advice so far to clubs in this situation (no access to the webfile system) is to distribute the NJK-1s to their members now and wait to see if I am successful.

Or you can try on your own to convince the Department of Treasury that you aren't a business. I wish I had more reassuring news at this point.
