Stop Unwanted Phone Solicitations

Effective July 1, 2002, Vermonters have a way to stop unwanted telemarketer’s calls.  Under a new Vermont law, you may sue a telemarketer for $500 if you get a call more than 45 days after you’ve placed your name on that company’s “do not call” list.  You may sue in small claims court in the county where you live.  If you don’t know how to serve legal papers on the company in Vermont, contact the Secretary of State to find out the address of the company or of an agent in Vermont who will accept legal papers for the company.  You can also get a booklet about small claims court from the Superior Court in your county.

If you are unable to find the company or a local agent in Vermont, please notify the Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program at 104 Morrill Hall, UVM, Burlington, VT  05405, Email: consumer@uvm.edu, phone 800-649-2424.  the Attorney General is interested in learning about telemarketers who are calling Vermont telephone numbers without being registered in Vermont because another part of the new law allows the State to bring a criminal action against unregistered telemarketers.
