Rationale for DTOAR Review

The obvious reason for having a review is to reaffirm information that has already been covered. However, in this review, not only is there a focus on knowledge and comprehension but application as well pertaining to multiple choice questions. This lesson will prepare students for the unit exam to follow that will encompass mostly multiple-choice questions at different cognitive levels. Because students pay attention to fun, animation, and challenge, the learning activity of the Game Show Presenter is perfect for the review. The Game Show Presenter is a TV-style quiz show that keeps students that struggle to keep their eyes and minds open, alert and amused while learning. It is also interactive and an effective training game for not only reviews but informal test, teambuilding and drills. It is a high-quality quiz show presentation that includes music, a funny game show host, sound effects and score keeping. It shows how effective technology can be in teaching. >

V. Objectives:

a. Given multiple-choice questions that are application based, students will choose the best statements that apply for each application question. (Application)

b. Given review questions to answer, students will explain or justify why their answers were correct or incorrect for each question. (Comprehension)

c. Given multiple-choice questions that are knowledge based, students will draw out factual answers, testing their recall and recognition skills for each knowledge based question. (Knowledge)

VI. Anticipatory Set:

a. Students will be asked to do a bell assignment at the beginning of class. The assignment will focus the student’s attention, provide a very brief practice on previously achieved and related learning, and develop a readiness for the instruction that will follow.

b. The assignment: Students will write a journal entry discussing their favorite event from the book, Dust Tracks on a Road, why was this your favorite event? What happened during the event? At what point in the book did this event take place (what chapter etc.)?

VII. Teacher Input:

a. The teacher will ask students, if they like, to share with the class their journals.

b. The teacher will inform students that today will be a review day; therefore, students should pay careful attention, take good notes and ask questions.

c. The teacher will remind students that their test will be next class period. The teacher will also explain to students the rules of the game show that they would play for a review.

IX. Checking for Understanding and Guided Practice:

a. The teacher will ask students what are the rules of the game show, what should they expect their tests to look like, and what date is there test scheduled for.

b. The teacher will further check for understanding by asking questions during the game show covering items that the students should have grasped during their classmates presentations.

c. The teacher will begin the review or game show with the class and explain the meaning of the correct answers for each question used in the game show (whether students got the answer wrong or right).

d. The teacher will eventually ask students to give an explanation for answers (what made the answer right or why was the answer wrong etc.)

X. Independent Practice:

a. After the game show, the teacher will go over questions that the students made up for review. The teacher will also pull out other items from the study guide to elaborate further for review.

b. Students will be required to study and review their notes and the study guide in preparation for their test the next class period for homework.

XV. Section 504: There are four students that are 504 in this teaching environment. These students’ accommodations are included in the lesson. Their accommodations include: Student (s) has access to peer tutoring-paired working arrangement (Students are grouped in teams), and Student (s) is given directions in a variety of ways (instructions are given by teacher and given again by students in their own words). Also, students need reinforcement for on task behavior (monitoring by teacher). Students have other requirements that have to be accommodated if certain situations occur: For example, if teacher assigns homework, students must keep an assignment notebook/homework folder in which I gave the students a syllabus for this week and students are to keep the syllabus in their planner or folder. Dr. Stanford,

Reflection:

Today was a "B" day; therefore, I had 1B and 2B classes.  This day became one of my most exciting days yet.  I wish I would have video taped today; It would have been a good day for you to come for an evaluation.  Today, I did my review with my classes.  They not only enjoyed themselves, but they were thrilled by the activity that I had them to do for review. The software that I wrote to you about earlier was perfect for today. If you do not recall, I told you about this software I found on the net that I wanted to use to review the class with, but I had to talk it over with Ms. Wallace first. Well she said it was okay and so I used it. The software is called, "Game Show Presenter." It is an animated game show, much like a quiz bowl with characters and animation.  I brought a buzzer from home. I divided the class into two groups (Team A and Team B). I had a table set up in the front of class in which one person from both teams would come and sit across from each other and the buzzer. The player that knows the answer to the question would of course buzz in first. Well, I projected the game (using the PowerPoint projector) on the screen to make the game show look like it was a big screen movie.  I had the characters of the game show talk and give jokes to the players. I had also created over 30 questions that were application, comprehension etc. questions covering a great deal of the study guide. I uploaded those questions into the software to use for the game. After each question, whether the students got the answer right or wrong I would explain the answer and told everyone that was in the audience at the time to be sure to take notes (the students rotated from each team, everyone got to go around two or three times). I was also very efficient on time, I gave the students an allotted time to answer questions, quickly switching from one team member to another.  I even used some test questions that I plan to use for the test.  The students enjoyed the review a great deal. I had a couple of students absent from each period and I hate that they missed class - they needed to be there for the review and they would have enjoyed themselves too. I also had one student that had missed class a couple of periods now, the staff found him hiding in the restroom. Apparently, he is a new student to Parkview and informed his other teacher that he was going to Central by the end of this week.  But that is not true. I was informed that he hates Parkview and does not want to go to school there. This just stirred the desire in me to really have wanted him in my classroom. Maybe, I could have sold him on Parkview (although, I am just an Intern-teacher) and he would have avoided this escapade of his. Well, now, he has to face some type of disciplinary act and I am sure it will not help his attitude toward Parkview. 

After the game, I took up the remainder of questions that were created by the teams. I asked some of the questions that they made up to the class for review as well (since they were to use the study guide to help them make up questions, this covered a great deal of the study guide as well). After that I began to pick some of the other things from the study guide that had not been mentioned to discuss with the classes. All in all, I covered a great deal of the study guide and I believe that if students have been taking notes throughout the presentations given by their classmates as well as my wrap up after each presentation and taken notes from the game today plus from their on questions that they made up, they will do very well on the test. But, for those students that have missed days of presentations, missed the review and were not there to work on creating questions they missed a lot of information (even while creating their questions they had to really think about what was going on in the book in order to come up with effective application and comprehension questions). 

After these periods were over, I took the projector back to the library. While in the hall, I noticed one of my students from 4A walking around the halls slowly. I asked her was she okay. She informed me that she was just kicked out of class for using bad language toward another student. She told me that she never says anything in class, but one of her classmates had started talking bad to her first and she could not take it anymore. I asked her if she thought she could have handled the situation differently where she was not in trouble and she could have released her frustration in a different way. We discussed different methods and in the end she realized that she allowed someone else to get her in trouble and put out in the hall while they were still in class looking like an angel; she realized that her decision was not a smart one. After that discussion, I told her to be sure to come to my class tomorrow and not to get in to any more trouble, because I wanted her to be in my class for the review. I told her that the review will be fun and she would not want to miss it. 

I also talked to the faculty member that borrowed my lesson plans etc. I asked her how she was coming along, and I answered some questions for her. She did not think that she would be confronted with so many issues while doing group work.  I gave he suggestions for all of her issues and told her that I had become very good at monitoring and adjusting and to come to me for any more questions that she may have because most likely I have already confronted those problems. Her students will begin presentations next week.  I told her how I wrapped up the lessons and she was thrilled about the idea of the game show etc., but then she said it seemed like I was doing a lot of work. I told her it may be a lot of work, but I do not mind when the students are learning, and it's fun for them and myself.  I am only worried about whatever Ms. Wallace wants me to teach next. 

Well, I could probably go on and on. But, all in all the day went pretty well. I think I really enjoyed myself because I actually  found and created something of my own that was fun, effective and worthwhile. 

I do not know how tomorrow will turn out, but I think I am going to ask Ms. Wallace to tape the class for me (if she is able to stay I the room long enough and if we are able to get the equipment). She told me that she thought the game went very well and that I used my time effectively and did a great job of covering the material for the students. If you would like you could drop by the class tomorrow, but it will be the same class that you observed last time (I do not know if it matters or not). We will be going over the same lesson plan as today. I attached today's lesson plan to this email (the class tomorrow will be my 4A class, it begins at 2:17pm to 3:45pm).
