Nj tax electronic filing from Apple computer
I followed good advice here and got an extension on 2015
return. We are a 10 year old PA investment club with 5 NJ
members who in past got non resident PA K1s. This would be
the first year we also are filing in NJ. No tax on club is
due.

I got through once (after many attempts) to NJ tax and they
said we are not registered and they do not find our federal
EIN.

I am confused about registering (Do I really want to be
established as a NJ business?) and was told by NJ
registration that neither they nor NJ taxation can handle
forms from an Apple computer, so please mail them the
registration form.

Should I mail NJ tax the paper return I have held since
February, even though that is against electronic filing
rules?

Edward,
I don’t know about filing in other states; I’m in California. But here is a suggestion about how to file. In which format were the returns filed? Often formatting changes when a Windows machine opens documents that are created (& Saved) on Macs. I’ve been taught by my Mac User Group to save and send documents as PDFs, because all operating systems supposedly can open PDFs. Do you think it is possible to try again?

If that is still a problem, does an assistant treasurer or your president have a PC?

Edward,

NJ is really confused this year. I am currently working with the state to try to get them to understand that they have two offices in the Treasury Department that are insisting on conflicting procedures. The Division of Taxation wants partnerships to file electronically. The Division of Revenue says that in order to access the efile application you have to be a registered business. The Division of Taxation says that investment clubs are not businesses.

My recommendation so far is to prepare the NJ return using bivio even though you cannot file the paper copy. If you mail in the paper copy it will be ignored by the NJ Division of Taxation. Distribute the NJK-1s to your NJ members as they need them to complete and efile their NJ personal return. Wait for further information from me as to how to file your NJ return.

Feel free to contact me directly for further information.

Ed - You might want to contact Bivio direct for forms: support@bivio.com. Ray

Roy,

NJ is exceptionally confused about all sorts of computer issues this year. It must be due to all the time Chris Christie has spent out-of-state and not running the state government like he should. <g> Considering that the "forms" in question are being completed on the NJ website it "shouldn't" matter what computer/operating system is being used at the remote site - but, and this is a huge but, there have been all sorts of problems with different browsers and OSes in different parts of their electronic access system. At the time the partnership webfile application was finally released in early April, (yes, April!) I couldn't successfully submit a return using any browser on Windows 7-10 or OS X. That was even though I could access and use all of the other webfile tax applications on their site.

All I can say is that this year NJ has been one major f***up.
