A New Item For Your Reading List
My earlier post about learning more about financial statements brought in this recommendation for a read from a bivio club member:

Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports

I've already ordered my copy!

Hi Patricia,

It was recommended by another bivio club member. Perhaps they can add some thoughts.

I have ordered it for myself so I'll let you know once I get it read.

I have read two other books which are in a similar vein. I found both of them very interesting.

This one is older, but gives you some nice perspective into the type of Accounting shenanigans that sometimes go on:

Quality Of Earnings

This one is newer and written by a journalist so it's a pretty easy read. But it's very interesting and gives you a nice perspective on things to think about when you're interpreting earnings information:

Financial Fine Print

All three of them are very highly rated on Amazon. There are reviews there and you can read a sample of the books first.

Laurie:
Our Club has an interest in REIT's, and I know that you have commented before on some tax implications. Are there some REIT's that Bivio tax software can handle? As Treasurer, I do not want the Club to invest in any vehicle which is not compatible with the Bivio tax software. I know, we could hire a CPA, whatever, but that would have to be the job of another Treasurer! Life is too short and I am too not-so-young!
Best regards,
Leo

I believe that you can invest in REIT index funds without a problem.  iShares Mortgage Real Estate Capped ETF (REM) is one. I checked with Laurie on Arlington Asset Investment Corp (AI) and it is fine.  AI invest in mortgage back securities.  REM is paying a 14% dividend and AI is paying out a 15% dividend.  Our club doesn't own either one but I personally do.
