Need a list of various roles for club members
Hi all,

I've been gone for awhile, but I recently joined a club
again, and I was asked to put together a list of activities
to help get current members more involved. Stock watcher is
the first that comes to mind. But aside from officer roles,
what other ways can members participate, especially if they
are not very stock savvy?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

We have a historian who records our events-growth,etc., trainer who is responsible for scheduling educational opportunities for members, event planner who plans our outings and event, and a "gatekeeper" this person keeps all designated team assignments on task and helps them meet their timeliness.

Welcome back Garbage Cop,

I too have returned to land of club investing. I'm in the process of starting a 2nd Model Club for the DC Chapter centered in suburban Maryland.

The list I created has 20 different roles with some overlap. These roles are cut down for easy bit size servings. There are the normal roles in a club: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

We have backups to both Treasurer and Secretary.

Two non Treasurers to be the Audit team (done 2x a year and before any withdrawal).

A technology person who gets the SSGs and Education presentstions in advance and loads onto their laptop and a projector for the meeting. Also helps with getting anyone else connected to the WiFi.

A greeter, or two.

A Portfolio Manager (we are starting out so they are also the VP).

Someone to be the Point of Contact (POC) with the BI Chapter and know what is going on locally. Have materials at the ready.

We are meeting at a public library (meetings are free and open to the public) so we have a POC with the library staff. We also do a free education class at the library (as a return for the free room space) so coordinating that information to the library staff as well.

I have discussed having a social media person. Put up a club Facebook page and most important post things on a regular basis to the larger investing community. Social media (Facebook and Twitter) only works if it is active AND conversational. It just can't be "we have a meeting please come". Social media requires attention and care.

Website manager. Create your own URL so non BI people can find you. Putting up a pamphlet is sooooo 20th century. Then manage it.

File Manager. Someone to make sure the Bivio files are easy to find and upload things. Give some time each month to let the File Manager walk the club through where everything goes.

Mid Month Presiding officer. For us, it is the VP. But you can meet online via Skype or Go To Meeting (GTM) or another service and discuss what is needed BEFORE the regular business meeting. In addition, we have another person be the POC for getting everyone connected to skype or GTM.

Stock Watcher. Everyone takes a role. It could be divided between watching the Portfolio and the Pounce Pile (our watch list). In my original club, going for 15+ years now, we have 47 former holdings that are not on the Pounce Pile. I am watching them to see if they might become a holding in the future. We call that "The Old Friends" list. It is a chance to track our judgment and ask "did we make the correct decision".

Education Chair. Should be self explanatory. Currently part of the VP role. But for a more established club it can be a separate position. Remember the Education chair does NOT do ALL of the teaching but coordinates so everyone does an education segment once per year.

Parliamentarian. My original club had a bad time ending on time. So having someone to remind all to keep things moving is a good thing. It is not so much to rule on procedural items. But keep the meeting moving and ending in 2 hours.

New Member Mentor. Someone to mentor the newbie on investing and club operations. Can be more than one person if you like.

I wrote this all out for the new DC Model Club. I shared via Google drive to all 7 members and gave everyone a place to select the roles they like and dislike. We select our club roles later this month.

I hope that helps.
