Club-Friendly Brokerages

I have no idea.  The previous treasurer had cancer and died so I was unable to find out how we got here.  When I took over as treasurer I wrote a letter to Computershare to ask them to send the information to me.  I was told I had to write each one.  And the funny thing (not so funny) was each one of them required something different to make the change.

Our club uses Computershare for some of ours and when I took over as Treasurer I started using Edward Jones for new stocks we purchased. I have had nothing but trouble with Computershare. We have eight accounts under them, however they just started letting me go online with five of them in April. Of course they didn't tell me till I asked in December. The other three I still have to call for everything. Nothing is easy. When I took over the account we must have made five trips to the bank for Notary or Silver Medallions or Letters of Instruction. Each different company under Computershare had a different requirement as what they could use to change the address and name on it. Every time I asked about going on line I was told no. I still have two accounts that I haven't been able to change from reinvested dividends to dividend checks and haven't been able to send them paperwork that will allow them to do that. Although I have sent them a few different documents they are never good enough. I've had problems with some of the accounts because of previous transactions before my time. They wouldn't accept what I needed for verification so would have to do something else. It took me months to get the stuff sent to me. Also if I have a problem I'm on the West Coast and they are on the East Coast so if I don't get to it early I miss them.

On the other hand, the ones we have with Edward Jones I can call and she will look up the information I need. I can go into the office with the officers and they can change an account over. I can talk to someone if there is a problem. I don't have to do it by snail mail. And we do pay more for the transactions but in the long run it is well worth it to me.

I don't see anyone mention Computershare so don't know how our Club got started with it but wouldn't recommend it to anyone. TD Ameritrade might be good. We just haven't used them.

We use TD Ameritrade after it purchased Scottrade. TD Ameritrade has not presented us with any problems, either online or with a broker. We use it as a bank and as a trading entity.

For the club that uses Edward Jones: There are many reasons to use a particular brokerage firm, but I would check the commission rates and compare with TD Ameritrade. I believe one club in this discussion uses E-Trade and I would check that out also.

@Lorna Duck: I am thinking that Computershare is not a brokerage but it manages your account similar to firms that handle retirement accounts. This is what I found on line:
Computershare Limited provides investor, plan, communication, business, stakeholder relationship management, and technology services worldwide. The company's investor services comprise the provision of registry maintenance and related services; plan services operations include the provision of administration and related services for employee share and option plans; and communication services consist of document composition and printing, intelligent mailing, inbound process automation, scanning, and electronic delivery. Its business services operations include the provision of corporate trust, class action, bankruptcy, childcare voucher administration, tenant bond protection, utilities administration, and mutual fund administration support services, as well as mortgage servicing activities; and stakeholder relationship management services group offers investor analysis, investor communication and management, and information services to companies, including their employees, shareholders, and other security industry participants. The company's technology services consist of the provision of software in share registry and financial services. It also offers transfer agencies, licensed dealers, and deposit protection services. The company was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Abbotsford, Australia.
I agree that I would not recommend this company to any investment club, although it might be excellent in what it does.
