Hi All,

We have members of this group from all over the US.

I'm curious. How is what you see happening in your communities and your states impacting your thoughts about investing?

Personally I'm torn. This level of uncertainty is unnerving, but there are also some really nice stocks on sale right now.

Just wondered what you all are thinking.

I absolutely look at this a value based sale. Growth sale, not so sure about that.

were in Michigan, im seeing all sorts of business closing temporarily, the state just asked the Govt for a state of emergency funding,
it is very unnerving investing right now, but i keep seeing it as a long term benefit, the markets have always come back from all the crashes it has seen. Fortunately this is not a financial crisis. I think it will eventually work out and hopefully we can take advantage of the stocks of good companies being really cheap. We are using put options right now to atleast balance everything out.

Washington State: It's getting very real. Many school districts closing. This has a domino effect that we will watch unfold over the next few days. With kids home, a parent needs to stay home from work. Add that to people with colds staying home and the impact of businesses of all sizes ability to function. Grandparents jumping in to help with the childcare exposes the more vulnerable population. If businesses suspend operations, this puts people out of work and unable to meet their financial obligations. Fundraising events cancelled.

How does this impact our stock investments? Not sure, except that the impact to date is unnerving. If I had sold my stocks a week ago, I could now buy back in now. Or will it drop further? Evidence overseas indicates yes. But how much and how long? I'm assuming the biggest hit has been taken here and it's a matter of holding on to what I have and watching.

Laurie,

We are spending the winter in Florida. Spring training baseball games are still drawing normal-sized crowds but many conferences, including political rallies and public appearances by Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders have been cancelled. Two cases just reported in Pinellas County, which is Saint Petersburg on the west coast, added to some in Orlando and elsewhere. I see that March Madness, which draws huge crowds, will play with no audience in Tampa for the regional basketball game. What a hit for hotels and restaurants plus rental cars, etc. So far we have not altered our lives except to wash our hands constantly.
Our investment club put stops on many of our stocks, so we are largely in cash right now. Huge capital gains hit for 2020 as we were quite profitable ahead of the correction.

I imagine many of us are eager to buy. But as Linda notes, the question that is more difficult to decide on is when.

Long term investing requires patience. We don't need to catch the bottom in order to make a sound investment. But for those of you who remember Mary Ann Davis, she used to advise that we don't try to catch a falling knife, either. We are officially in a bear market. They typically last 14 months. My point is, unless you are simply dollar-cost averaging a set amount every month, you have time to wait for the market to begin to settle. Fill this time with education and research so you are ready when it begins to rise again.

Lynn's advice is spot on. This is the fourth major correction I am participating in. If you weren't lucky enough to get out 20% ago, it makes little sense to try and time it now. If you did get out near the top, then you're ahead of the game. At this point, you can't lose. Just be patient. Selling is always the easy part. Buying, not so much. Good luck everyone and stay home if you can.

Lynn, good to hear from you!  I agree 100% with what you posted.   I'm waiting for the next two quarterly reports as I expect them to be horrible. Then I'll back up the truck.

I actually think the next quarter's reports will not be too bad (and may even be slightly positive) as for most of the March quarter there was not a big issue. It is the next one and maybe two after that may have some large hits.

Interesting discussion! Keep it going.

Like one of the other responders we are from Washington Seattle Metro area. Schools are closing, events cancelled, businesses asking employees to stay home, etc. I have talked to a few local service oriented businesses and they say they have already lost 100's of thousands in revenue and don't see an end in sight before they get into serious cash flow issues. It will take longer to bubble up to larger corporations but if things happen in the rest of the country like hear I see this being a deep hole.
