Schwab Takeover of TDAmeritrade

The TDAmeritrade merger with Schwab was finalized on October 6. AMTD was no longer trading as of October 7.

I assume all of you who have TDAmeritrade accounts have received a note from Charles Schwab like my club did.

They've set up a welcome center here to answer questions for account holders:

Welcome.Schwab.com

It has a fun little video talking about the history of the two firms.

Looks like if you have an account with TDA you won't see anything different for a while. Make sure that you check that the cost basis of all of your shares agrees with what is in bivio. It will be impossible to change any TDA mistakes after the account has been merged.

If you owned shares of AMTD, you will see the merger entries made soon. Once they are made, don't forget to check the cost basis of each lot of your new Schwab shares to make sure they are correct.

Not sure what to do with the following.  Our club has TDAmeritrade as our broker so I checked on the cost basis of our shares and everything matched except for 3.  We owned Raytheon and when they merged we received 50 shares of Carrier Global Corp (CARR) NON-TAXABLE SPIN OFF/LIQUIDATION DISTRIBUTION, 25 shares of Otis Worldwide Corp (OTIS) NON-TAXABLE SPIN OFF/LIQUIDATION DISTRIBUTION and 76 more shares of Raytheon (RTN) which is now Raytheon Technologies Corp. (RTX) and Cash in lieu of 0.696 shares $42.59 minus
MANDATORY REORGANIZATION FEE (755111507) $38.00.  When I compared the cost basis in bivio and TDAmeritrade they were as follows:
                     TDAmeritrade            bivio
Carrier            25.4760                18.2252
Otis                 71.2404                87.6200
Raytheon        77.3593                76.8744

It also listed the following in the capital gains/losses list:

I am sure Laurie can answer your question, but I would first total the cost basis (# of shares multiplied by per share cost basis) for all three and see if the Bivio and TDA match. It could be a matter of allocation of share numbers. I would also check the number of shares that TDA and Bivio show for each holding. And does Bivio and TDA show the capital gains or just one of them?

We transferred Pep and AFL into TDAmeritrade in 2011. The number of shares are correct, but the cost basis isn't. Did TDAmeritrade just put our cost basis at 0 when we transferred the shares? How would I handle this if we sold our shares? Nothing is simple. Lucile Sorrells

If I were looking into this I would get the last statement from the previous broker and find out what their cost basis was for the shares before I transferred them. I then I would contact TD Ameritrade and find out why they do not have a cost basis for your shares.

Specific questions about the cost basis of shares you hold in your club should be sent to support@bivio.com

We can review your particular situation there and give you further guidance on what may need to be done to address them.

Lucille is right. Nothing is simple about addressing cost basis when you do DRIP investing. That is why we recommend that you not do that.

The cost on the day of transfer to a new broker is not the correct amount to use for cost basis for an investment clubs holdings.

I am sure Laurie can answer your question, but I would first total the cost basis (# of shares multiplied by per share cost basis) for all three and see if the Bivio and TDA match. It could be a matter of allocation of share numbers. I would also check the number of shares that TDA and Bivio show for each holding. And does Bivio and TDA show the capital gains or just one of them?

so what cost basis do you use. I was going to change what TD had as our cost basis to what bivio had for that date. Looks like would be correct?

If your bivio records are correct that would be the case.

However, from what I've seen, most clubs that have been doing DRIP investing for years do not have correct bivio records, especially for years when they didn't use AccountSync.

There are too many things that affect cost basis that may have not been dealt with correctly over the years. With so many lots, this gives many many opportunities for incorrect cost basis per lot.
