My club is meeting to discuss, how to deal with the event of
a death of one of our members. Our PA states that when
notified, we do a full withdrawal and send a check to the
estate of the deceased member.
my Question is how to do this without the club incuring a
tax event.
1. Is there a way to transfer appreciated stocks directly to
the member.
2. I am not comfortable sending a check thru the USPS even
( priority mail)
How have other clubs dealt with this issue

Our dying members all had person schwab accounts.
We transferred stocks to the personal schwab accounts.

We have in our policies that we only transfer stock - so we can avoid taxes.
Our challenge has been doing that within 30 days of death when members travel a lot (retirement ages) and I can’t always get signature in that time line. We lost $6,500 because of that just last month.

Donna O'Connell,
I understood you to saythat you transferred stocks from your Schwab club account to individual Schwab account owners.
We are presently having an impossible time getting Schwab to do that. When we call Schwab, the Representative suggests we cash out and get a check. We'd much rather send stocks to each owner. How did you get Schwab to transfer stocks?
Did you have a special arrangement? All recommendations are welcome.

We were told in one of our many communications with Schwab that we had to transfer stocks only into a Schwab account.
Then after the family of the deceased both opened Schwab accounts they said we could only transfer to non Schwab account.
Then they said we needed 3 signatures from admin only and then 3 signatures from admin plus signature of president and treasurer and secretary and then they said we needed all members to sign.
So basically I would ask them again until you get the answer you need. Ours was to transfer to Schwab accounts and after 3 months we were able to do that.

All of the answers so far have missed the most important point. You don't want to transfer stocks into a personal account of a decedent. The broker will lock the decedent's account once it learns of the death and the club can't know with certainty what the decedent's will specifies for the distribution of their assets. If the club DOES succeed in executing this transfer and it turns out that the will specifies a different beneficiary, the club will be responsible for paying the correct beneficiary and trying to recoverr the mis-transferred funds.
All of this is separate from the issues with Schwab as a broker.
As to mailing high value checks through the US mail, you can always use Registered Mail (different from Certified Mail). Registered Mail is insured and there is a chain of custody record of the letters movement through the postal system. Fees are based on the declared value of the mailpiece, starting at $19.50 plus postage for values up to $500. For values greater than $5000, the fee is postage plus $40.50 plus $3.10 per $1000 of declared value or fraction thereof above $5000.
